I would highly recommend staying at the Crows Nest Cottage on Somes Sound - it is keep super clean and fully stocked with everything you would need for a weeks stay. This includes sheets, towels, washer, dryer and a large pot for cooking your lobsters. On Monday - Wednesday & Friday as long as Paul (the owner of the cottage) has a good catch you can go down to the dock and purchase lobster right from him.
The view of Somes Sound from the outside deck and livingroom is so peaceful - it's a great place to have your morning coffee. We even had a deer visit daily and one day she came with her baby.
Paul and Ashlee live up the road and are close by "if" you should need anything. There is internet access too. Friewood is available for the cool nights if you want to light a fire.
Bar Harbor is a short drive and there are a lot of cute shops and restuarants. For groceries I would recommend going into Bar Harbor and going to Hanaford's as it is cheaper than the IGA store that is in Mt. Desert. On the nights you can't get lobsters from Paul - Beal's has a large select of lobster, mussels and clams.
Take a trip to Arcadia Park - if your not a hiker do the Park Loop - stop by Thunder Hole (best time to see this is 2 hours before high tide) but it is something to see at anytime. Then take the ride up Cadillac Mountain - park you car and walk around the top (there are walking paths) and take in the views.
We just finished a fantastic week in Topside Cottage! Ashlee set the tone a year earlier when she coached us through the available dates, cottages, peak times for crowds, and best bets for peak color. (There are no guarantees, but we nailed it this year going the second week in October.) Ashlee and Paul were unfailingly friendly and helpful. If Acadia is your primary destination, you'll have a hard time finding a better location than the Cottages. You're only about a 15-20 minute ride from the mainland (which I definitely recommend for your grocery shopping), the Acadia entrances, Bar Harbor, and Southwest Harbor. Go where you want to go, and then make the short drive back to your cottage on the Sound, where you'll only see someone else if you go out looking for them. We loved the woodsy setting and the privacy. The cottages have been in the family for years and have obviously been tenderly cared for. At the same time, if you want to stay someplace where everything is brand new, look somewhere else. That's not what the cottages are about. They're about a feeling of having a home for the week instead of a hotel room, having your own space instead of staying with a crowd of people, dealing with family owners instead of corporate employees. We flew into Portland, spent the first night there, and then worked our way up the coast, spending the second night in Boothbay and the third in Rockland before checking into Topside. I'm so glad we did that instead of taking the interstate straight to MDI! We enjoyed the coastal towns so much, when it came time to drive back to Portland we took the coastal road again, despite the traffic. A few of the things we'd wanted to do closed after Columbus Day, like McCloons Lobster Shack on Spruce Head Island. But the lobster rolls at Wharf Gallery & Grill on the Schoodic Peninsula more than made up for it. Don't miss the Peninsula, by the way. There's one trade off to be aware of when you pick your dates. The free Island Explorer buses that go everywhere on the island stop running after Columbus Day. We sorta missed that. The trade off was, the crowds were smaller, the parking easier, and the leaves more colorful. We'd love to do it all again, and if we do, our first call will be to Ashlee and Paul.
We had the pleasure of staying at Rock Point from 3-10 June 2017. Even with 4 children (3 in their 20's) we had enough room to enjoy ourselves at night when we finally stopped moving. The cabins beautiful view was more than enough but the location allowed us to visit every bit of Acadia. Enjoying Paul's fresh lobster on the last night just capped a fantastic visit. We couldn't have been more pleased. Thank You!
We recently stayed at Rock Point cottage with out two children ages 10 and 5. We had a wonderful vacation on Somes Sound. Rock Point cottage was perfect for our family--very clean, spacious, comfortable! We LOVED the fireplace and used it every night! The dock off the house was lovely and the views from the deck off the house were amazing--perfect for our morning coffee! The location of Rock Point to all things Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor was ideal for us as we did many different activities all over the island each day and felt we were very centrally located. As hosts, Paul and Ashlee could not have been more gracious with their time answering our numerous questions beginning from our first inquiry, up until our departure day--thank you for making our time on Mount Desert Island so enjoyable Paul and Ashlee! We cant wait to come back!
We just returned from a week at the Sea Breeze cottage, and it was a wonderful experience. The cottage was clean, comfortable, well decorated, and had everything we needed right down to linens, towels and a well equipped kitchen (including all supplies needed to cook our own lobsters). Paul and Ashley were incredibly welcoming and attentive (don't miss the chance to by some lobsters right from Paul's dock) and bent over backwards to make sure that we had a great trip. We had some special requests to help us stay with a young toddler, and they went well above and beyond to accommodate. The views of the sound are breathtaking, and the location is convenient to Bar Harbor and Southwest Harbor. Highly recommended and we will be back!
We have stayed at Patten Pond four times over the past 12 years, and loved every vacation there. The cottage is clean and well stocked. The view of the pond is lovely. It's a great pond for swimming and kayaking or canoeing. Our little piece of heaven.
We were so excited for this vacation and this cottage far surpasses everything I expected. Well stocked, very clean, amazing view. Would definitely return.
We have enjoyed the Crow's Nest cottage for several years. Always quiet and relaxing. Great views of the Sound and of course, sunrise and watching the sunset across the water. Cottage is really very comfortable and "user friendly!" We intend to come back forever.
We ditto every review. These cottages are equipped with everything one needs for a comfortable stay, offer a magnificent view of the Sound, are close to Acadia National Park for hiking and biking, provide fresh lobster a few steps from your door and , wildlife sightings of porpoise, osprey, eagles and deer are a treat. We have been returning for many years to Rockpoint. Our hosts, Paul and Ashlee make us feel very welcome.
John & Nancy - It is always a pleasure, and we look forward to your return! Thank you for the kind words, and we will plan for more fireworks next Summer! Best wishes, Paul & Ashlee
My family and I have been coming to Chambers for about 10 years now. There are only two of the cottages we have not stayed in. Everyone that we had the pleasure of staying in has been wonderful. Everything you need is right in your own cottage. We eat lobsters every night fresh off the boat. Our favorite saying is "it never gets old". Each year holds more memories. Our hosts are the best you ask for. We will be back next Sept in Seabreeze.
What a wounderful experience! My wife and I celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary at Crow's Nest. The cottage was beautiful, well equipped and the views of Somes Sound and Sargent Mountain were exceptional. The changing of the leaves were absolutely stunning! The hosts were gracious and easily available if needed. Fresh lobster off the dock was caught hours before and delicious! We couldn't have asked for a more wonderful setting to spend our anniversary! Thank you Paul and Ashlee! We are already planning our trip for next year.
We just spent 1 week in heaven.....the view of the sound & the mountains is hard to beat....having a lovely deck & a floating dock to relax upon is the absolute best. It was hard to leave this clean, comfy cottage to go traipsing about the island!! Being so close to Acadia, one of the most gorgeous National Parks, is such pleasure...we popped in & out of the park at all hours of the day. A big THANKS to Paul & Ashlee for making our stay so wonderful, peaceful & comfortable...we WILL be back!!! Cheers!!
Been staying at Chambers for 20 years. Feels like a second home. No one better than Don ,Marilyn and now Ashlee and Paul . Southwest harbor and the surrounding park are awesome. Never ever tire of it. My year begins every year the first week in May when I arrive at Rockpoint . As I leave Chambers Lane I start counting the days til I can come again. LOVE LOVE LOVE this place.
Dear Amy, thank you so much for your kind words. We always look forward to your arrival in Rock Point, and we thank you for your loyalty to Chambers Cottages all these years. It has been a privilege getting to meet such a nice, fun group of people, as well as the flamingos who seem to follow suit :o) We look forward to your return and wish you the best! - Regards, Paul, Ashlee & Camden
Chambers Crow's Nest Cottage
What a great place to relax, quiet and peaceful surroundings. Paul is a wonderful host and will accommodate your needs the best he can. We have rented before in the area and others cannot compare. Fresh caught Lobster delivered practically to your cottage daily. Lots of wildlife at your doorstep. Highly recommend.
Dear Jeff & Rene, it was an honor to meet you both. Just the few conversations we had while picking out lobsters made for a memorable time, and we thank you for your nice words. It was a pleasure to have you as guests, and we hope to see you back in the future. Regards, Paul & Ashlee
Me and two of my three daughters stayed in the Crow's Nest Cottage this past May and enjoyed our time at Mount Desert Island so much! The cottage was wonderful and very comfortable and clean. The view of the Sound was beautiful and we enjoyed Acadia National Park every day of our trip. The hiking was superb and words cannot describe the breathtaking views of the open ocean! We also spent time shopping in Bar Harbor and driving up Cadillac Mountain. It was always so nice to come back to our cozy cottage to relax and to spend some time together as a family. We definitely would love to come back next year!!
Thank you for your kind review, Toni. It was a pleasure having you and we're so happy you enjoyed your stay!
Our week at the Sounderosa Cottage, part of the Chambers Oceanfront Cottages, was wonderful. The comfortable cottage has everything you need to make it the perfect time away. Being centrally located on Mount Desert Island made it easy to explore the entire island.
The only problem that we encountered (which wasn't much of a problem) was that the internet service was sometimes "spotty". We had trouble staying connected but we would just wait and it would come back up later. Considering that we were on vacation being away from technology didn't bother us!
We highly recommend staying here and would love to come back sometime to revisit the area.
Topside was Topnotch!
My three children fell in love with the cottage from the first moment they entered the cottage til the sad moment that we had to leave! Spectacular views of Somes Sound as your backyard! Thank you Don, Marilyn, Paul and Ashlee! Down to Earth folk.
Excellent vacation destination!!! We loved our stay in the Crow's Nest, Great views and our host Paul and his family are very accommodating to your needs, goes the extra to ensure that your vacation is what it should be. fresh live lobsters available at their dock, no need to travel to store or wharf. Cottages are clean and have all the comforts of home ready for when you arrive. Lots of viewable wildlife just outside the cottage seen deer and squirrel daily. Can't wait to return again.
Dear Paul and Ashlee (and Camden, of course)-- We (myself, wife and adult child) stayed with you last July 4th week, and I can say only that we have no suggestions for improvements or anything else---a week of peace and quiet and beautiful sunrises (up at 5am to see them, and then back to sleep). Everything worked--utilities, kitchen etc etc. We have already reserved for next summer, with another couple we have known forever, so that in itself is a high recommendation." Hope your winter isn't too tough Best, Peter and Audrey.
